Conference Information
Since 1973, the International Research Council on Biomechanics of Injury (IRCOBI) has organised an international conference annually. The 2012 conference will take place on 12.-14. September 2012 in the city of Dublin, Ireland. Conference venue is Trinity College Dublin.
Welcome Note
Welcome to the website of the 2012 IRCOBI Conference of the International Research Council on Biomechanics of Injury (IRCOBI). The conference will be hosted at Trinity College Dublin in the heart of the centre of the city of Dublin, Ireland.
The IRCOBI conference has been taking place annually since 1973, and is the premier forum for researchers in the field of injury biomechanics. The ultimate goal of impact biomechanics research is the design of a safer environment for society: better vehicle interior and exterior design, better protective equipment, safer sporting environments etc. Achieving this requires both scientific and technological advances on many fronts, from the fundamental study of injury mechanisms at the cellular level, to understanding both active and passive whole body motion during impact, and to the detailed influence of vehicle and equipment design on human injury outcome. Given the difficulties associated with faithfully modelling accident scenarios either physically or experimentally, the wealth of information derived from epidemiology and crash reconstruction approaches clearly also plays a crucial role in achieving our goal of a safer environment for society. Accordingly, papers addressing all aspects of the biomechanics of injury which ultimately lead to better environmental design are welcome for the 2012 IRCOBI Conference. This is only the second time the conference has been hosted in Ireland, with the first time in 1996, when it was held at University College Dublin under the organisation of Dr. Denis Wood. The 2012 Conference will be organized by Dr. Ciaran Simms of Trinity College Dublin, whose research group within the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering has a focus on Vulnerable Road User safety and soft tissue characterization.
